SPRINGFIELD – The Binghamton Devils surrendered three power-play goals, including two in the third period, in a 5-1 road loss to the Springfield Thunderbirds on Sunday evening.

After no scoring in the first period, Jayce Hawryluk extended his point streak to seven games on the power play to give the Thunderbirds a 1-0 lead. Henrik Borgstrom sent a shot towards the top of the crease that Hawryluk deflected by the left arm of goaltender Cam Johnson for the one-goal lead 2:23 into the period.

Paul Thompson put the T-Birds up 2-0 with the help of former Devils’ defenseman, Jacob MacDonald. At the top of the left wing circle, MacDonald sent a low shot on net that Thompson deflected through the legs of Johnson at the 4:43 mark with assists from MacDonald and Borgstrom.

Binghamton responded less than two minutes later to split the Thunderbirds’ lead in half, 2-1. John Quenneville blasted a one timer through goaltender Michael Hutchinson and just over the goal line for his eighth of the season. Quenneville’s goal was assisted by Michael Kapla and John Ramage at 6:22 of the second and the Devils trailed, 2-1, to start the third despite having a 31-21 shot advantage.

Springfield came out flying in the third period and scored three goals for a 5-1 win. Anthony Greco went right around the defense on the left side and lifted the puck over a sprawling Johnson for a 3-1 lead 6:56 into the third for his 12th of the year. Borgstrom and Sergei Shumakov each potted power-play goals at 7:46 and 12:25 of the third period for the four-goal victory.

Hutchinson stopped 42 of 43 for his second win of the year while Johnson collected the loss with 24 saves.

After two road games Wednesday and Friday, the Devils are back home next Saturday to host the Belleville Senators at 7:05 p.m.
