BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Devils made another late push on Sunday night, however, the Utica Comets came away with a 4-3 win over the Devils in front of 4,379 fans at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

Utica took the lead late in the first period as Zac Lynch fired a snap shot over the left shoulder of goaltender Eddie Lack for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Lynch’s second of the season in just his sixth game with the lone assist to Adam Comrie with just 3:04 left in the period. Utica took the one-goal lead into the intermission despite the Devils holding a 7-4 shot advantage.

A power-play goal and shorthanded goal gave the Comets a 3-0 lead after two periods. Frankie Simonelli fired a one timer through traffic by Lack for the 2-0 lead just 2:56 into the middle frame. The goal was Simonelli’s first of the year with assists from Michael Chaput and Patrick Wiercioch.

While the Devils were on the power play, Andrew Cherniwchan picked up a loose puck and beat Lack for the 3-0 lead. Michael Kapla dropped the puck back in the neutral zone and Cherniwchan was right there for the interception and eventual goal at the 6:46 mark of the second. The goal was unassisted and the Devils trailed 3-0 after 40 minutes while also holding a 21-10 shot advantage.

Nathan Bastian scored his ninth of the year to get the Devils on the board in the third. Jake Walman’s shot from the point banked off the end wall right to Bastian and he beat goaltender Richard Bachman for at 1:35 and the Devils trailed 3-1.

Utica regained the three-goal lead as Matt Leitner scored his first goal from the bottom of the left wing circle through the arms of Lack at 6:32 for a 4-1 advantage, unassisted.

Jacob MacDonald got one back for the Devils as he left a wrister go from the right circle that beat Bachman for his 18th of the year with assists from Kevin Rooney an John Quenneville at the 8:06 mark of the third period. The goal pulled Binghamton back to a one-goal deficit with time remaining.

The crowd erupted again as Blake Speers put home his 10th of the year on a scramble in front of the net on the power play. Speers’ goal was helped by Bastian and Michael Kapla with 3:09 left in the game and the Devils pulled within a single goal of tying the game. 

With the net empty, the Devils were unable to tie the game and the Comets held on for the 4-3 win. Lack stopped 10 in the loss while Bachman stopped 38 in the win.
