BINGHAMTON – BINGHAMTON – The Binghamton Devils came out of the gate flying on Saturday night, scoring four goals in the first period in a 5-1 victory over the visiting Utica Comets in front of 4,024 fans at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

The Devils scored four goals in the opening 8:29 to take a 4-0 lead in the first period. Nick Lappin put home his eighth goal of the season just 1:17 into the game for the 1-0 advantage. Kevin Rooney set up Lappin’s goal on a great pass from below the goal line.

Pavel Zacha helped set up the game’s second goal with speed down the right wing side of the ice. Zacha cut to the net and was denied on the original shot, but, Studenic came in and beat Ivan Kulbakov on the rebound for his seventh of the year at 6:09.

The Devils added to their lead at 7:29 of the first frame from a deflection on a Yegor Sharangovich shot. Kurtis Gabriel was waiting in front of the net and got his stick on the shot for his first of the year with the lone assist to Sharangovich. Following the goal, the Comets replaced Kulbakov in net with Connor LaCouvee.

Exactly one minute later, John Ramage recorded his second goal of the season with assists from Zacha and John Quenneville. The goal put the Devils up by four goals with 11:31 left in the first.

Utica responded late in the first period to pull within three goals. Lukas Jasek beat a sprawling Mackenzie Blackwood by the right leg pad for his fourth of the year with 2:58 left in the first. The Devils took a 4-1 lead into the intermission with Blackwood stopping nine of ten shots from Utica.

Ryan Schmelzer scored his second American Hockey League goal in the second period to put the Devils back up by four. Michael McLeod found Schmelzer in front of the net who beat LaCouvee for a 5-1 lead. Binghamtom took that lead into the final period depite the Comets leading in shots, 22-20.
