SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Binghamton Devils scored five-straight goals to eliminate a three-goal deficit in a 5-3 victory on Friday night inside MassMutual Center.

Chase Balisy got the scoring going for Springfield 5:21 into the game. Mackenzie Blackwood made the original save and the puck trickled behind him and Balisy tapped it in for the 1-0 lead on his ninth of the year. 

Springfield took a two-goal lead as Alex Grenier scored a highlight-reel goal on the backhand at 11:57 of the first. Grenier spun around in the right wing circle and lifted a backhand shot over the left shoulder of Blackwood for the 2-0 lead.

Juho Lammikko put the T-Birds up 3-0 after a great pass from Grenier in the right wing circle. Grenier turned and fired a pass to the front and Lammikko lifted the puck over the right shoulder of a diving Blackwood for his eighth of the season with assists from Grenier and Maxim Mamin.

Kevin Rooney pulled the Devils back within two on a goal late as he snapped in his eighth of the year from the left wing circle. Bracken Kearns and Nick Lappin battled below the goal line and helped feed Rooney for his goal with 1:36 left in the first period. 

Another late goal in the first frame helped the Devils get back within a goal courtesy of Michael Kapla. After the Devils forced a turnover in the offensive zone, Tim Kennedy found Kapla sliding in from the point and he beat goaltender Sam Montembeault for his second of the year with just 0:26 left in the opening period. Kennedy collected the first assist with John Quenneville getting the second helper and Binghamton trailed 3-2 after the opening twenty minutes. Shots on net favord the Thunderbirds, 12-10. 

Kapla started where he left off in the second period to tie the game. From the left point, Kapla let a shot go that beat Montembeault by the left leg pad for his second of the night and third of the year at 2:18. The lone assist was given to Ryan Penny and Evan Cowley replaced Montembeault in net for the Thunderbirds.

Nick Lappin put the Devils up 4-3 with his team-leading 15th goal of the year just 1:01 later. Viktor Loov send a hard pass to the front of the net that Lappin deflected by the leg pad of Cowley for the one-goal lead with assists to Loov and Bracken Kearns. The Devils took the 4-3 lead into the final period with the shots favoring the Thunderbirds, 27-20.

Rooney added a goal late in regulation for his second of the night and ninth of the year to seal the two-goal victory for the Devils. Rooney’s goal was assisted by Lappin and Kearns with 5:02 left in the game. Blackwood picked up the win with 31 saves while Cowley was credited with the loss on 18 stops.
