BINGHAMTON – Mackenzie Blackwood stopped all 22 shots he faced as the Binghamton Devils shut out the visiting Rochester Americans, 3-0, on Saturday night at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Devils fired 18 shots on net in the first period and were able to get one by goaltender Scott Wedgewood. Nick Lappin found Blake Pietila in the slot with a pass and Pietila’s shot went under the left arm of Wedgewood for the 1-0 lead with 1:56 left in the opening period. Assists on Pietila’s eighth goal of the year were credited to Lappin and Kevin Rooney and they Devils took the one-goal lead into the intermission, along with an 18-8 shot advantage.
After no scoring in the second period, Eric Tangradi put the Devils up by two goals on the power play in his first game back since October 27. From below the goal line, Tangradi hit the skate of defenseman Andrew MacWilliam and the puck went over the shoulder of Wedgewood for a 2-0 lead at 1:43 of the final period.
Lappin took a pass from Pietila and fired the puck into an empty net for a 3-0 lead with 1:42 left in the game. Pietila, Lappin, and Rooney all had two-point nights in the win. Blackwood collected his first shutout of the season and first since last March, stopping all 22 shots he faced.
