About Special Hockey:
Of the many sports and recreational opportunities available, hockey is unique. Both on and off the ice, hockey players and fans are a community. This is the second year that Broome County has supported opportunities for individuals of all ages with developmental disabilities to be a part of the hockey community. ASHA Special Hockey is able to support athletes with a developmental disability because of your support. ASHA is an educational organization which supports developmental hockey programs which complement the therapeutic goals (i.e. physical, occupational, speech, special education and behavioral) which are integral to the special needs community.
Our organization focuses first on these measurable therapeutic goals, and uses the sport of hockey to support athletes to achieve their success. Learn more at www.americanspecialhockey.org beyond playing sports, our players and their families are sports fans. While our athletes may have a disability diagnosis; family members, friends and our larger communities, reflect additional people who benefit from the availability of adaptive sports with properly trained coaches and programs like ASHA Teams in their community. The Southern Tier is home to the Ice House Hawks, which is now in its 4th season playing special hockey. The national association is also now based out of Broome County.
About Sled Hockey:
“Sled hockey provides opportunity for many types of disabilities and there are opportunities available in local areas for recreation/competition all the way to the National Sled Team that plays in the Paralympics. Sled hockey is rapidly growing in the US and players are “hooked” once they touch the ice the first time.” – USA Hockey
